Carl Peck here! Drawer of comics and maker of films! Laying it on the line for your consumption. February is upon us you say?! Ah time! You cheeky swindler! But I have not been idle.
THE DILDO, COMING IN HOT!
If you'd like to read the first 3 pages of “Hydrophobia” go here. Just one for you this month. There’s another almost finished but I thought it best to just get something out rather than keeping you waiting.
If you’re new here, I’m posting these as I finish them. I’ll post them in it’s entirety when complete. I’m aiming to get it printed as part of a larger comic too. If it pleases you to know, this time I did all the grey bits in Procreate on the Ipad. The previous pages were done on lots of sheets of tracing paper and scanned in. Madness!
SKETCH BOOK DUMP
Huzzah! I filled a sketchbook!
Loving a landscape A5 ring bound sketchbook at the moment. Surprisingly hard to get hold of. Don’t get me started on my Victor Meldrew-esq fury at my local art shop’s lack of co-operation in this matter. Lest we also forget; “Well we have professionals that buy these brushes all the time and they never complain.” EXCUSE ME? The saga continues. I’ll keep you in the loop.
This is mostly filled with attempts at drawing Henri Salonen, a composer for film and TV who commissioned me to draw a profile pic for his social media. I think it was 150+ drawings at the last count. Never did quite get the likeness down but here’s the finished article;
Props to Nic Farrell for teaching me how to do the sketchbook gif thing, which I have shamefully ripped from her own newsletter. But only because I thought it was real cool. So I stand by what I have done.
FEATURE FILM FIRST WATCH THROUGH
I was hella nervous about showing the HARD EDGES to anyone else in it’s entirety. Two hours passed, the sun had gone down and in the darkness I heard sniffling. “Oh heck, Ryd’s got a cold,” I thought. But no, he was crying! To my delight it was because he’d had an actual emotional response to it. So I was stoked! Anyway it’s early days there’s still lots to do. Perhaps the feeling of devastation comes later?
Speaking of devastation; To my horror, on January 17th Colin Stevens who plays Bernard in our film was killed in a car crash. My thoughts are with his loved ones. I didn’t know Colin that well but his brilliant performance is baked into this film and I’ll be forever grateful to him. He did lots of community work and was an avid campaigner for the NHS.
A particular memory I will cherish is when he got right up into Johnboy’s grill as his character really lays into him. I kept pushing for him to get even closer but it was too much for Johnboy who repeatedly burst out laughing.
I MADE A COMIC IN ONE HOUR
It’s a new PB for me. A good exercise in just doing it and not thinking about it too much. I hope to do more.
If you’re on the old social’s I post things on my Instagram quite a bit. Heck I even went through the stupidly difficult process of making a Mastodon account. So far I’m really blowing up on there! Wanna be my first follower?
Anything you’d like to see that I’m not showing you? Thanks for checking out my stuff! Until next month! Ta ta!
